(RepublicanPeak.com)- A staffer for Kentucky Senator Rand Paul suffered a potential brain bleed and a punctured lung after a violent stabbing attack in Washington, D.C., CBS News reported.
According to a police affidavit, staffer Phil Todd was attacked on Saturday by 42-year-old Glynn Neal as he was leaving a northeast DC restaurant. In his statement to police, Todd said he did not know Neal and the suspect did not make any demands nor did he say anything before jumping on top of Todd and stabbing him in the head and upper body. Police described the attack as “random” and “violent.”
According to the police report, a friend who was with Todd at the time pushed the suspect off of him, allowing the two to make their escape.
Todd suffered knife wounds to the left side of his head, penetrating the skull and possibly causing an internal brain bleed, the affidavit said. A second deep stab wound to Todd’s left torso punctured his lung. Additionally, he also suffered a “minor” stab wound to the left side of his chest as well as a cut to his left ear, according to the affidavit.
Glynn Neal was later arrested at his home after police found his cell phone near the scene of the crime. When officers arrived at Neal’s home, they observed that he had fresh injuries.
According to the court docket for Washington DC Superior Court, Neal will be charged with assault with attempt to kill.
Glynn Neal was recently released after serving 12 years for a separate felony in Washington D.C. He will be appearing in Superior Court on April 6 for a preliminary hearing.
In a statement on Monday, Senator Paul confirmed that a staffer in his office was “brutally attacked in broad daylight.” He thanked the police for quickly apprehending the suspect and the hospital staff who were treating Todd.
