Meta May Be Playing Trump, Siding With China, According to Investigation

Is Meta playing both sides? A former executive from Mark Zuckerberg’s tech empire has blown the whistle, claiming the company secretly cozied up to communist China while undermining American tech leadership.

And we’re trusting this guy, now?

At a glance:

• Former Meta executive Sarah Wynn-Williams filed an SEC whistleblower complaint accusing Meta of trying to gain favor with China

• The complaint alleges Meta offered China complete censorship control and access to user data to enter the Chinese market

• Meta allegedly developed a China-specific censorship system in 2015 and worked closely with the Chinese Communist Party

• Meta spokesperson Andy Stone dismissed the claims, saying the company never implemented these ideas

• The allegations come as Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently visited the White House to discuss American tech leadership

Meta Accused of Offering Censorship Powers to Chinese Communist Party

The Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating explosive allegations against Meta and CEO Mark Zuckerberg after a former executive filed a whistleblower complaint. Sarah Wynn-Williams, who previously worked for the tech giant, claims the company was willing to give Chinese authorities complete control over content censorship and access to user data in a desperate bid to break into China’s lucrative market.

The complaint filed in April alleges Meta developed a China-specific censorship system in 2015 and even proposed installing a “chief editor” to manage content during periods of social unrest. According to Wynn-Williams, these actions directly contradict America’s strategic interests in maintaining technological leadership over China, especially in artificial intelligence.

If this is true, and Zuckerberg was all in, then what about that interview he did with Joe Rogan? Why did he keep this part of their operations so secret?

Wynn-Williams didn’t hold back in her criticism of her former employer, pointing to what she views as hypocritical behavior from Zuckerberg. “One of the top priorities for President Trump is the West winning this [AI] critical race and yet for many years Meta has been working hand in glove with the Chinese Communist Party, briefing them on the latest technological developments and lying about it,” the whistleblower stated in her complaint.

Meta Denies Allegations While Facing Scrutiny

Meta has forcefully pushed back against the accusations, characterizing Wynn-Williams as a disgruntled former employee with performance issues. Company spokesperson Andy Stone dismissed the claims, saying Meta “ultimately opted not to go through with the ideas we’d explored” regarding potential China operations.

Stone further attempted to downplay the significance of the allegations by noting that Meta’s previous interest in entering the Chinese market was “widely reported beginning a decade ago.” The response fails to address specific claims about Meta’s alleged cooperation with the Chinese Communist Party or the potential sharing of sensitive technological information.

The company’s stock has shown minor volatility amid the controversy, closing at $625.66 on the day the news broke, down 0.36%. Year to date, despite the recent turbulence, Meta has still gained 4.41% in market value.

The timing of these allegations is particularly interesting as they come shortly after Meta settled a $25 million lawsuit with President Donald Trump over his suspension from Facebook and Instagram. Some observers have noted that Meta has apparently adjusted its products and policies in ways that align with Trump’s political stance since that settlement.
