Former First Lady Melania Trump has released a statement on the attempted assassination of her husband, Donald Trump. She called the shooter a “monster” and said when she saw the bullet whizz by her husband’s head, she realized how close she had come to a “devastating change” in her life. She paid tribute to the former President and called on Americans to remember he is a human being, not a “political machine.” Mrs. Trump said the would-be killer tried to “ring out Donald’s passion – his laughter, ingenuity, love of music, and inspiration.”
Melania Trump also thanked US Secret Service personnel, whom she said had put their lives on the line to protect the former President. Mr. Trump has since stated that he will carry on his campaign uninterrupted and called for national unity. On his Truth Social media account, he wrote, “In this moment, it is more important than ever that we stand United and show our True Character as Americans.”
Similarly, President Biden addressed reporters after the incident, confirming he had spoken to his rival and wished him a speedy recovery. He called for America to unite and condemn political violence, saying it has “no place” in the United States.
A 20-year-old gunman shot and injured Mr. Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania, narrowly missing his head. Dramatic scenes showed the Republican jump to the floor as bullets were heard at the outdoor rally. When he rose to his feet, flanked by US Secret Service officers, blood was seeping from his ear.
President Biden said the FBI will lead investigations into how Thomas Matthew Crooks, a Pittsburgh native, could climb to the top of a nearby building and get a clear and unimpeded view of Donald Trump. Secret Service Director Kimberley Cheatle explained that she is working with law enforcement agencies to “understand what happened, how it happened, and how we can prevent an incident like this from ever taking place again.”
