Insiders Say Matt Damon Supported Ben Affleck Through “Humiliating” Divorce

Hollywood professionals Matt Damon and Ben Affleck have been good friends for decades. And their relationship is still much deeper than that of business partners, as inside sources have revealed that Damon is right by his friend’s side through his recent divorce.

Affleck had married fellow actress Jennifer Lopez in a Las Vegas wedding in July 2022. The following August, they had a public ceremony and celebration in Georgia. On the two-year anniversary of that ceremony, “The Wedding Planner” star filed for divorce.

Although the split was suspected after the couple went almost two months without being seen together, the divorce itself was saddening to fans who waited 20 years to see the couple get together. They were engaged decades ago, called it off and married different people, and then finally reunited and married in what was believed to be a dream come true.

And now that the marriage has fallen apart, Affleck is reportedly feeling “humiliated” and has turned to Damon when he went through an emotional breakdown because of it. According to inside sources, Affleck broke down alongside his friend, expressing how he is “jealous” of Damon’s success off the screen—specifically, how he has managed to quit smoking and maintained a strong relationship with his wife, Luciana Barroso.

One source described Affleck as “particularly vulnerable” and “humiliated” following the “failed marriage,” adding that the actor even “broke down in tears” when talking to his friend about it. The distraught actor and producer also acknowledged that he has repeatedly “chosen the wrong path” multiple times while Damon took “the right road.”

Affleck also said that he would “hibernate right now” if that were an option. Apparently, he is taking a step back from the public eye, as he was noticeably not in attendance at the premiere of his latest project with Damon, a movie called “Unstoppable,” which stars his now ex-wife. There were reports of the “Bourne” actor refusing to talk about his friend with Lopez and saying that he would “always” stand by Affleck.

While Hollywood divorces are not uncommon, the breakup of “Bennifer” is especially dramatic due to the couple’s romantic history. Affleck and Lopez were engaged just after the turn of the century, after having met on a movie set. The two dated for a couple years in what turned out to be way too much publicity to successfully tie the knot.

Lopez has said that this first relationship ended in calling off the wedding three days before getting married, which she said happened because the two “crumbled under pressure.” 20 years later, when the two reunited and decided to try their hand at love once again, Affleck was reportedly concerned about their relationship being sprawled all over social media.

But through it all, even the darkness of his failed marriage, Affleck remains supported by one of his oldest friends. The relationship between Affleck and Damon is well documented, starting from when they met at the respective ages of eight and 10 as neighbors in Boston, Massachusetts.

The two began auditioning together in the 1980s and made their big break in the mid-90s, when “Good Will Hunting” became their first Oscar-winning film. Both Damon and Affleck wrote and acted in the movie.
