Undocumented Gifts Raise Eyebrows
The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) in Chicago has released a report that puts Mayor Brandon Johnson’s administration under the microscope. The report reveals that nearly 70% of the 380 gifts logged from February 2022 to March 2024 do not list the donor’s identity, raising significant transparency concerns.
These gifts, which include designer items such as Hugo Boss cufflinks, a Montblanc pen, and a Gucci tote bag, were accumulated during both Johnson’s tenure and that of former Mayor Lori Lightfoot. The lack of proper documentation has sparked debate about potential conflicts of interest and the influence of gift-givers on city officials.
The Mysterious “Gift Room”
Adding to the controversy is the allegation that Mayor Johnson restricted access to a so-called “gift room” at City Hall. When OIG personnel attempted to inspect this room, they were reportedly denied entry by police and told to make an appointment. This incident has fueled speculation about what might be hidden from public view.
“For many decades, this city has given people no reason to trust things that happen behind closed doors, and what we have here is gifts being exchanged, perhaps literally, in a windowless room in City Hall with no public accountability, no transparency,” Inspector General Debrah Witzburg said.
The inspector general’s office was also denied access to the gift log and was instructed to file a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request, which was not responded to in a timely manner. Eventually, an incomplete spreadsheet of gifts was provided after a compelled document request.
Mayor Johnson’s Response
In the face of these allegations, Mayor Johnson has firmly denied any wrongdoing. He asserts that all gifts are properly logged and that there is a process in place for handling them. Johnson claims the OIG report mischaracterizes the situation and suggests it is chasing a non-existent issue.
“These are gifts to the city. They’re logged. The characterization of how this report came out is misguided, and, again, we’ll make sure that our team gives you the access that you need so that you can see the gifts that are given to the city,” Johnson said.
The Inspector General has recommended compliance with public reporting rules and access for inspections. In response, the Mayor’s office has committed to transitioning to new policies for gift acceptance and inspection access, agreeing to follow the Board of Ethics’ guidance on making gifts accessible for public viewing.
