On Netflix’s celebrity roast of Tom Brady, which released over the weekend, the famed quarterback’s thirteen year marriage to (and divorce from) Gisele Bündchen attracted the hits like an exposed tight end in the fourth quarter of the Superbowl. Fellow football players and commedians smelled the blood in the water and piled on the potentially-tender subject, but the NFL legend seemed to take the jokes in good humor during the Kia Forum event, which Netflix titled “The Greatest Roast of All Time.”
The high-profile couple officially announced their divorce in coordinated posts to Instagram in October 2022. The decision, according to Brady’s announcement, was amicable and mutual, and emphasized the couple’s intention to continue to parent their children together even as their relationship changed. Bündchen’s announcement, meanwhile, emphasized the difficulty in deciding to divorce, but characterizing it as the final step in a long-growing rift between the couple. Both parties expressed gratitude for their children and their time together, and asked for privacy as they went through the divorce process.
Comedian Nikki Glaser commented during her roast that Brady’s illustrious career and multiple trips to the Superbowl had netted him seven rings, then corrected herself to eight since “Gisele gave hers back.”
Superstar comedian Kevin Hart hosted the event, opening with a joke about how Brady had left Bill Belichick “high and dry” when he departed the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, after twenty seasons, for the New England Patriots in 2019. Brady screwed his coach with that move, but that’s understandable, Hart said. People screw their coaches all the time. He pointed out that this was something Brady had in common with Gisele, who is now dating her jiu-jitsu instructor Joaquim Valente.
Podcaster Tony Hinchcliffe joined in the fun by opening his set by complimenting Brady’s shoes and asking “Did you get those in the divorce?”
The good-natured ribbing over Brady’s divorce was among the lighter humor of the evening, and a raucous time seemed to be had by all, including Brady, who took it all in stride.
