Newsom’s Preemptive Strike Against Trump Administration
California Governor Gavin Newsom has called for a special legislative session to bolster the state’s liberal policies in preparation for the arrival of a second Trump administration. Newsom knows that Trump could well kill the horrific progressive policies that have made California one of the worst states in the country for its residents to live in.
The special session, set to convene on December 2, aims to fortify California’s stance on key issues such as climate change, reproductive rights, and immigration. Newsom’s administration is preparing to defend these policies against anticipated challenges from the incoming federal government.
During Trump’s previous term, California filed over 120 lawsuits against his administration. State Attorney General Rob Bonta has already begun reviewing these past legal actions to prepare for potential new federal challenges. The special session will consider increasing funding for the attorney general’s office to combat these anticipated legal battles.
“We rejected him. We rejected his values. We rejected his agenda,” Bonta said.
Despite Trump’s increased support in California, where he won more than 40% of the vote in the recent election, Newsom remains committed to positioning the state as a bulwark against conservative federal policies. This stance has drawn criticism from Republican lawmakers, who view the special session as unnecessary and politically motivated.
So rather than respecting the result of the election, Newsom wants to stop a significant number of his state’s own citizens to see none of the benefits of a Trump presidency.
California is not alone in its efforts to protect liberal policies, either. Other Democratic-led states, including New York and Massachusetts, are also strategizing to defend key areas such as reproductive rights, civil rights, and environmental justice. Newsom leads a coalition of Democratic governors aiming to strengthen abortion access across multiple states – even though Trump has said this is a matter should be decided by the states…
Let’s see if he pulls it off.
