Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) admitted last week that President Joe Biden’s age and mental capabilities were valid concerns for voters but insisted that the American people care more about feeding their families and paying the rent than they do Biden’s poor debate performance.
The Vermont Senator appeared on CNN’s “The Source” with host Kaitlan Collins last Monday where the two discussed the fallout from the president’s alarming debate performance in Atlanta on June 27.
Sanders, who is 82, told Collins that while voters have reason to be concerned about Biden’s age and cognitive abilities, they were more concerned about being able to feed their families or afford to pay their rent.
Sanders suggested that President Biden should keep his focus on issues that matter to voters and blasted the news media for turning American politics “into a beauty contest” or “Grammy Award” competition.
He said Americans should vote for the candidate whose policies would improve their lives and suggested that this would not be Donald Trump.
Sanders accused Trump of calling climate change a hoax and wanting to take away a woman’s right to choose. He also warned that Trump’s previous administration was populated by “extremely anti-union” officials.
Senator Sanders suggested that President Biden should be interacting directly with the American people to make the case for his reelection. He said Biden should “turn off the teleprompter” and address voters directly, adding that voters should be able to judge for themselves how Biden is doing.
At the same time, Sanders blamed the media for Biden’s failure to make the case to the American people, accusing the media of focusing more on “who is the best entertainer.” He insisted that the presidential campaign should be focused on policy issues and suggested that if it was, the president would do fine.
