In light of vocalist Steven Tyler’s recent vocal cord injury, the legendary Boston rock band Aerosmith has announced that, after 54 years on the road, they will be retiring from touring.
Tyler damaged his “instrument” during last year’s farewell tour, pinpointing the moment the injury occurred to a performance at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York. He has announced that a recovery to his voice is “not possible.”
Aerosmith thanked their legions of admirers for helping them become one of the most recognizable names in rock and roll. In September 2023, Tyler stated that he had been given stringent medical orders to refrain from singing for the following 30 days.
Steven Tyler has been the front man for the most successful American rock band of all time, selling over 150 million units worldwide, including over 85 million in the US. In terms of total certifications and albums certified with multiple platinum discs, they are tied for first place among American groups. The group is a four-time Grammy Award winner. Two of Aerosmith’s four Grammys—for 1994’s “Livin’ on the Edge” and 1995’s “Crazy”—were for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.
“I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing,” which was included on the “Armageddon” soundtrack and was released in 1998, was Aerosmith’s first single to reach number one.
Along with Britney Spears, NSYNC, and rapper Nelly, Aerosmith performed at the 2001 Super Bowl halftime show. That same year, they were inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame.
Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith debuted in 1999 at Disney World in Florida and subsequently in Paris, France, marking the band’s first foray into theme park attractions.
Although known as a Boston band (the group’s first name was “The Bad Boys from Boston”), Steven Tyler was born Steven Tallarico in NYC. His father, Victor Tallarico, taught music at Cardinal Spellman High School in the Bronx.
Moving to Yonkers at the age of nine, Tyler went through the public education system until he was expelled from his high school just before graduation for smoking marijuana.
Rolling Stone included Tyler on their list of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time.
Over the next half-century, Aerosmith toured relentlessly, releasing scores of singles and albums.
